  Melissa is listed in the 1860 Census in Vestal, NY. She must have gone to Michigan in 1860 because she is also listed in the June 1, 1860 census for Matherton, No. Plain Twp, Ionia Co. Family history says that in1860 Melissa lived with Cordelia, perhaps to help care for her and the children. Cordelia died in December, 1862. Melissa married John Dougherty in 1862. They lived in Lyons, which is just south and west of Matherton. In December 22,1892, letter from Melissa to Daisy Benham, Melissa is living in Lyons, MI. She sent two pairs of gloves, one each for Beulah and for Mabel, who were married at that time. (JLBW has copy of the letter.)
