| 3 | Melissa is listed in the 1860 Census in Vestal, NY. She must have gone to Michigan in 1860 because she is also listed in the June 1, 1860 census for Matherton, No. Plain Twp, Ionia Co. Family history says that in1860 Melissa lived with Cordelia, perhaps to help care for her and the children. Cordelia died in December, 1862. Melissa married John Dougherty in 1862. They lived in Lyons, which is just south and west of Matherton. In December 22,1892, letter from Melissa to Daisy Benham, Melissa is living in Lyons, MI. She sent two pairs of gloves, one each for Beulah and for Mabel, who were married at that time. (JLBW has copy of the letter.) | TRUESDELL, Melissa Jane (I511)

| 4 | They rented the Kidd farm from Estelle Kidd, who had two daughters. No one (Maxine, Chuck or Max) remembers a husband. Max Benham says.... Guy built a lot of houses around Muskegon. In the Depression the family didn't do badly. Guy traded a couple of houses for some cars from Dobson Motors. Neither cars nor houses were selling well, but Dobson didn't know that houses were selling worse than cars. They were beautiful cars, including a Flying Cloud, which they drove around Muskegon. That's how he got started in the car business in Muskegon. When in Onaway, he devised a way to repair a defective differential in the Maxwell car, a generic problem in all Maxwells. He learned by trial and error. Max says that he took one apart and when he tried to put it together, he did it wrong. He asked a local car mechanic how to fix it. The mechanic called in his friends and they had a big joke at Guy's expense. After he learned to fix the part, he made money at it. he was well-known around Onaway, as was his father. Guy tried working in a logging camp. Max said that the first evening when the men took off their clothes to go to bed, they hung them around the fire to dry. That was his last day. He could not stand the odor. _____________________________ Ethel and Guy were divorced in 1940. ______________________________ Around 1950 he had a bowling alley in Lakewood, outside of Muskegon. When JLBW was in India with her parents, the roof collapsed from the weight of snow. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 1920 Census. She married Beecher Benham Sr. in Dec. 24, 1816 in Gorham later called Hopewell NY. Their first, child, Robert Dickson was born in 1818, Eli was their second child with "our Beecher" my great grandfather in 1820. They had two more children of which no record can be found. The family lived in Hopewell until 1830 and in that census Beecher was not withh his family. He was purported to be in Upper Canada running a brewery. There is no record of the family ever following him. In 1840 we find Nancy in Hopewell,"did she ever leave"?, and mar- ried to Elijah E. Madison also spelled Mattison. They had a two year old son Andrew J. Madison. Their is also another male in the household be- tween 15 - 20 yrs. old, could this be Beecher Jr. at 20 yrs old. In 1847, according to Robert's obituary, Nancy, Robert, Eli, Beecher Jr.,and Andrew J. Madison moved to Middlebury Ind. and we find in 1849 Eli and Beecher Jr. worked two days "Roadwork" to pay on Nancy's taxes,. Twp. records Mar.9, 1849. In 1850 Nancy is in Middlebury, Ind. with her son Eli 53 yrs old and Andrew J. Madison 12 yrs old. Still on Nancy,s farm. In 1860 we find Nancy with Eli, no Andrew J. Nancy was 63. In 1870 Nancy was living with her oldest son, Robert in Goshen Ind. and she died there in 1874. She is buried in a large plot in Oak Ridge Cemetery, Goshen, Ind. beside her sons Robert and Beecher Jr. Robert and his wife Martha and their children are buried in the same plot. Very impressive stone, probably bought by Robert with small stones at each individual grave. We are using the date Jan. 19,1874 as the date of Nancy's death as it. is the date the cemetery lot was bought and she is the first person buried in it, per cemetery records. We first find mention of Elijah E. Mattison in 1332 when he bought a. piece of land from Johnathan and Mary Benham. Researched and written by Charles F. Benham | DICKSON, Nancy (I390)

Wednesday, September 17, 1913, page 4. Body found in Pool of Blood. Old man died of Hemorrhage alone in his Room this Morning. The dead body of M artin Reinjes, age 64, was found this morning a 1 o'clock lying in a pool of blood on the floor of a room over the Tom Lee laundry on Washington avenue between Fourth and Fifth streets. Shortly before 1 o'clock Tom Lee was aroused by a noise as of some one in pain. He immediately ran into the street and notified Officer Hall, who in company with Charles McCanty, went to the apartment. Lighting a lamp the man was found stretched out on the floor in a seminude condition. A hurry to? call was sent to Coroner Gilbert who after seeing the remains pronounced the man's death was caused from a strangulated hernia. An inquest ws found unnecessary. Undertaker LeFrance was called to take charge of the remains. Reinjes had been a resident of this city for many years. At one time he conducted a tailoring establishment. For the last five or six years he had been employed in saloons and restaurants as a porter. He had been in poor health for some time. The funeral arrangements will be made later. --------------------------------------- According to Jean Mepham, wife of Jacob's grandson, Charles Mepham, Jacob arrived in Bay City when he was sixteen (that would be about 1891, a year when there is no Reintjes listed in the Directory). She believes that his sister, Mary came with him. Their family story was that he left Holland "because of transcritpion of young men to fight in the Boer War. She said that he was never in touch with his mother again. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Gert Reintjes in email on 23 Dec., 2002 His Aunt Mary (Ria), the youngest daughter of Petrus Hendrikus, said Martinus left St. Oedenrode because of the poor and difficult circumstances at the time. His wife, Antonetta was already ill when he left. Petrus took care of his mother until she died in 1895. He would talk about his brother and sister who had gone to America, but never about his father. Aunt Mary thinks that her father was very sad "why his father left", but Gert thinks it is a family secret. Aunt Ria has some photographs of Maria (Duval), her uncle Jacobus, and her own father Petrus Hendirkus with his wife Anna. | REINTJES, Martinus Wilhelmus (I279)
