Nancy Dickson
NANCY DICKSON; Born in Pa. in 1797 and died in Goshen Ind, on Jan.19,
1872, aged 77 yrs old. She married Beecher Benham Sr. in Dec. 24, 1816 in
Gorham later called Hopewell NY. Their first, child, Robert Dickson was
born in 1818, Eli was their second child with "our Beecher" my great
grandfather in 1820. They had two more children of which no record can
be found. The family lived in Hopewell until 1830 and in that census
Beecher was not withh his family. He was purported to be in Upper Canada
running a brewery. There is no record of the family ever following him.
In 1840 we find Nancy in Hopewell,"did she ever leave"?, and mar-
ried to Elijah E. Madison also spelled Mattison. They had a two year old
son Andrew J. Madison. Their is also another male in the household be-
tween 15 - 20 yrs. old, could this be Beecher Jr. at 20 yrs old.
In 1847, according to Robert's obituary, Nancy, Robert, Eli, Beecher
Jr.,and Andrew J. Madison moved to Middlebury Ind. and we find in 1849
Eli and Beecher Jr. worked two days "Roadwork" to pay on Nancy's taxes,.
Twp. records Mar.9, 1849.
In 1850 Nancy is in Middlebury, Ind. with her son Eli 53 yrs old
and Andrew J. Madison 12 yrs old. Still on Nancy,s farm.
In 1860 we find Nancy with Eli, no Andrew J. Nancy was 63.
In 1870 Nancy was living with her oldest son, Robert in Goshen Ind.
and she died there in 1874. She is buried in a large plot in Oak Ridge
Cemetery, Goshen, Ind. beside her sons Robert and Beecher Jr. Robert and
his wife Martha and their children are buried in the same plot. Very
impressive stone, probably bought by Robert with small stones at each
individual grave. We are using the date Jan. 19,1874 as the date of Nancy's
death as it. is the date the cemetery lot was bought and she is the first
person buried in it, per cemetery records.
We first find mention of Elijah E. Mattison in 1332 when he bought
a. piece of land from Johnathan and Mary Benham.
